Why is Lake Nyasa special for fish?

Lake Nyasa (also called Lake Malawi) contains more fish species than any lake on Earth — over 1,000, the majority endemic cichlids. Clear water makes snorkelling among them a world-class experience.

Is it safe to swim?

Yes, the northern end of the lake near Matema is considered safe for swimming. Unlike some other African lakes, bilharzia risk is generally low here but ask locally before swimming.
