June – October
The dry season (Jun–Oct) makes trails more accessible and waterfall hikes comfortable. The park can also be visited year-round — rain makes the waterfalls more dramatic but trails muddier.

Where are the Udzungwa Mountains?
The Udzungwa Mountains are located in southern Tanzania, about 350 kilometres southwest of Dar es Salaam. The park gate is near Mang'ula town in Kilosa District, Morogoro Region. The mountains form part of the Eastern Arc Mountains — a chain of ancient ranges that run from Kenya to Tanzania and are considered one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots.
What makes Udzungwa Mountains National Park special?
Udzungwa Mountains National Park protects one of the richest forests in Africa for endemic species. The park is home to two primate species found nowhere else on Earth — the Iringa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey — along with over 400 bird species, more than 25 of them endemic to the Eastern Arc range. Unlike most Tanzanian parks, Udzungwa is a hiking-only destination with no vehicle game drives.
Do I need to be very fit?
The Sanje Waterfall hike is moderate — good general fitness is enough. Longer multi-day routes into the mountains are more demanding. Talk to your operator about the right route for your fitness level.
Can I do a day trip from Dar?
Yes, but it is a long day — 4 hours each way. An overnight stay near the park gate is strongly recommended. Mang'ula has simple but comfortable guesthouses.
