How much does it cost to enter Udzungwa Mountains National Park?
The 2026 entry fee is $30 USD per non-resident adult per day, plus 18% VAT — an effective $35.40/day. Children 5–15 pay $10 + VAT. Tanzania residents and EAC citizens pay TZS 10,000 (~$4) plus VAT. Cash is not accepted — payment is via GePG Control Number by card or mobile money at the gate.
How long is the Sanje Waterfall hike?
The Sanje Waterfall trail is approximately 12 km return with around 900 m of elevation gain, and takes 4–5 hours total — about 3 h up to the top of the 170 m falls and 2 h back down. A guide is mandatory. Start by 07:00 to avoid afternoon heat and storms.
How do I get to Udzungwa from Dar es Salaam?
Drive 350–370 km west on the A7 TANZAM Highway via Morogoro and Mikumi to Mang'ula — 5–6 hours in a private vehicle. Public Ifakara-bound buses (Shabiby, Sumry) stop at Mang'ula junction for TZS 25,000–40,000 (~$10–16) one-way.
Do I need a guide to hike in Udzungwa?
Yes — a TANAPA-licensed guide is mandatory on every trail without exception. The guide fee is charged per group at the park gate (not per person) and is typically $20–30 per hike. Multi-day routes (Mwanihana, Lumemo) must be booked 4–6 weeks ahead.
When is the best time to visit Udzungwa Mountains?
June to October for the most reliable hiking — dry trails, cooler temperatures, fewer leeches. Waterfalls are most dramatic late January to early March but trails are slippery and landslide-prone. Late June or early November strikes the best balance of strong waterfall flow and manageable trails.
Can I combine Udzungwa with Mikumi or Ruaha?
Yes — both are natural pairings. Mikumi → Udzungwa is ~95 km / 1.5–2 h on tarmac, perfect for a 4–5 day southern-circuit primer from Dar. Udzungwa → Ruaha is ~357 km / 6.5–7 h via Iringa for a fuller 7-day loop.
