Day 1 — Arrive Arusha — Drive to Tarangire
After morning pick-up from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, drive south to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2 hours on tarmac). Afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River, home to Africa's densest elephant population. Enormous ancient baobab trees, large herds of buffalo, and hundreds of bird species set the tone. Tarangire is famous for tree-climbing pythons and the dry-season concentration of wildlife along the river.

Driving instead means you'll spend more time on the road than on game drives. For first-timers visiting in August (peak migration), 4 days with a fly-in is a workable minimum.
How much does a 4-day Tanzania safari cost?

The 4-day version compresses Tarangire to a morning game drive (versus a full day on the 5-day) and removes one Serengeti night. You still see Tarangire, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater — the three signature northern circuit parks. You skip Lake Manyara entirely (which the 5-day also skips), and you have less buffer if a Serengeti game drive needs to be extended for a leopard sighting or river crossing.
Can I see the Great Migration on a 4-day safari?
Yes, from July to September your operator will position you in the northern Serengeti for Mara River crossings. Crossings are unpredictable — herds cross when they choose, not on schedule. With only 2 nights in the Serengeti, allow your guide to choose the best camp location for your dates. From January to March, you'll be positioned in the southern Serengeti for the calving season.
Can I do the 4-day safari without flying?
Technically yes — but you'd spend Day 2 driving 8–10 hours from Tarangire to the Serengeti, lose the afternoon game drive, and arrive exhausted.
