Why Tanzania is a strong points-and-miles redemption
Three reasons travellers consistently get outsized value flying to Tanzania on miles instead of cash:
- The cash fares are inflated. Kilimanjaro (JRO) and Dar es Salaam (DAR) are long-haul, low-competition routes. Business-class cash fares from the US East Coast to JRO routinely sit at $4,500–7,000 round-trip, and economy peaks at $1,800–2,800 in August. The same seats are bookable for 75,000–110,000 miles one-way in business.
- The best programs partner with Chase and Amex. You don't need to actually fly the carrier to earn the miles. Qatar Avios, Turkish Miles & Smiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and Air France/KLM Flying Blue are all transfer partners of Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, or both — so a sign-up bonus on a Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold often covers most of a round-trip.
- Hotel sweet spots exist too. Park Hyatt Zanzibar at 15,000 World of Hyatt points/night and Four Points Arusha at 12,500 Marriott Bonvoy points/night are two of the better value-per-point hotel redemptions in East Africa.
The downside: Tanzania award space is limited, taxes/surcharges on some routings are punishing (Emirates is the worst offender), and the seasonal Qatar Doha–JRO route is a planning trap. Read on for what's actually worth booking.

Specific pricing varies by zone, date, and partner-vs-own-metal — verify on each program's award search before transferring.
1. Qatar Airways Qsuite via American AAdvantage
The single best business-class redemption to Tanzania for most travellers. American Airlines AAdvantage prices a one-way US-to-JRO Qsuite redemption at around 75,000 miles with taxes typically in the $50–100 range. Doha is the connecting hub, and the Qatar Doha–JRO direct route operates September to April only — in May to August you'll route US → Doha → DAR, then connect via Air Tanzania or Precision Air to Arusha.
How to book:
- Search award space on the AAdvantage award tool, or use seats.aero / Roame to filter Qsuite availability specifically.
- Phone-book via AAdvantage if the route doesn't display online (occasionally needed for JRO sectors).
- Each-way pricing means you don't have to lock in a return immediately — useful when JRO award space is patchy.
How to fund AAdvantage:
- AAdvantage is not a 1:1 transfer partner with Chase or Amex. The two practical routes are Bilt Rewards (1:1 transfer) during occasional transfer windows, or Marriott Bonvoy at 3:1 (with the bonus 5,000 miles per 60,000 transferred). Citi AAdvantage co-brand cards also earn directly.
- For most US travellers, accumulating AAdvantage means flying American, holding an AAdvantage Aviator or Citi AAdvantage card, or buying miles during a promotion (AAdvantage runs roughly 100% mile-buying bonuses two to three times a year — at ~1.7¢/mile, that beats the cash fare).
2. Turkish/Swiss via Air Canada Aeroplan (Star Alliance sweet spot)
Aeroplan prices a one-way US-to-JRO business-class redemption via Star Alliance partners at around 75,000 Aeroplan points — typically routing US → Istanbul (Turkish) → JRO, or US → Zurich (Swiss) → JRO via Brussels Airlines and Ethiopian. Aeroplan's distance-based award chart is one of the most generous for transatlantic-plus-Africa routings.
Why Aeroplan beats Turkish Miles & Smiles for most travellers: Turkish Miles & Smiles has very limited US transfer partner support (it is not a 1:1 Chase or Amex partner in the US), making it hard to top up. Aeroplan is a 1:1 transfer partner of Amex, Chase, Capital One, and Bilt — so a single Sapphire Preferred sign-up bonus can fund a one-way JRO redemption.
Booking notes:
- Search Star Alliance award space on the Aeroplan award tool (it includes United, Lufthansa, Swiss, Turkish, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian, and EgyptAir routings).
- Aeroplan adds a "preferred partner premium" on certain routings — check that the displayed price matches the published chart before transferring.
3. United MileagePlus + the Excursionist Perk
United MileagePlus prices business-class US-to-JRO at around 88,000 miles one-way and economy at around 44,000. The single best feature is the Excursionist Perk on round-trip awards: book US → Africa → US, and any one-way award flight that stays inside Africa is free, allowing a JRO → Zanzibar → Nairobi → JRO loop without spending additional miles.
Standard United MileagePlus paths to Tanzania:
- US → FRA (Lufthansa or United) → JRO (Ethiopian or Brussels via ADD)
- US → ZRH (Swiss/United) → JRO (Swiss/Brussels/Ethiopian)
- US → IST (Turkish via Star Alliance) → JRO
Funding United: Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers 1:1. The Chase Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, and Ink Business Preferred all transfer in real time. Bilt Rewards also transfers 1:1.
For longer Tanzania itineraries (3–6 weeks), the Excursionist Perk can effectively absorb your internal flight cost between Arusha and Zanzibar.
4. KLM via Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
KLM is the largest carrier at Kilimanjaro and the most reliable European routing for North American travellers. The cheapest way to book KLM business class on miles is Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which prices US/UK → AMS → JRO at approximately 110,000 Flying Club miles off-peak in business one-way, and around 50,000 in economy.
Why Flying Club instead of Flying Blue? Flying Blue's award pricing on KLM JRO routes is dynamic and frequently shows business class at 180,000–250,000 miles per direction. Flying Club's published chart is more predictable, and Virgin Atlantic is a 1:1 transfer partner of Amex, Chase, Citi, and Bilt — so it's almost always cheaper to transfer Amex/Chase points to Flying Club and book KLM through them.
Booking notes:
- KLM JRO award space rarely shows online for Flying Club. Search Flying Blue first to confirm availability, then phone-book Flying Club with the dates and flight numbers.
- Flying Club pricing varies by peak/off-peak calendar — booking outside August/September is meaningfully cheaper.
5. Ethiopian ShebaMiles (own-metal value)
Ethiopian Airlines flies Addis Ababa (ADD) → JRO multiple times daily and connects to most US hubs (IAD, ORD, EWR, ATL, LAX). ShebaMiles prices Ethiopian-operated awards starting at 15,000 miles one-way in economy and from around 30,000 miles in business — among the cheapest published rates for an Africa redemption.
The catch: ShebaMiles is poorly supported by US-issued credit cards. Marriott Bonvoy transfers to ShebaMiles, but the ratio (3:1 with the bonus) is not competitive. The realistic path to earning ShebaMiles is by actually flying Ethiopian — which makes this a strong option for travellers already heading to East Africa for work or extended travel, but a tough choice for one-off safari trips.
If you have ShebaMiles already: Ethiopian removed stopover charges on all own-metal awards in late 2024, so an Addis stopover going either direction is now free — useful for combining Tanzania with Lalibela or Aksum.
6. Emirates Skywards — why it's usually not worth it
Emirates flies Dubai (DXB) → DAR daily. Skywards prices the route at around 200,000+ Skywards miles round-trip in business, plus carrier-imposed surcharges that frequently exceed $1,200 per ticket even on award fares. The combination of high miles cost and crushing fuel surcharges makes this one of the worst Africa redemptions on a value-per-mile basis. The exception is in-cabin paid upgrades or last-seat-available bookings where no other partner has space.
Better use of Emirates Skywards points: First-class redemptions to Europe or short-haul flights inside the GCC region, not Tanzania.
7. Air Tanzania Twiga Miles (the local option)
Air Tanzania launched its Twiga Miles loyalty programme in March 2026. Members earn 5 points per US dollar in economy, 8 points in premium economy, and 12 points in business class. The programme is closed-loop — points cannot be transferred to other airlines or partner programmes, and award redemption is currently limited to Air Tanzania domestic and regional flights (DAR–JRO, DAR–ZNZ, DAR–Mwanza, DAR–Entebbe, etc.).
For a single-trip traveller, Twiga Miles will not materially change your booking. For travellers based in East Africa or those flying Air Tanzania repeatedly, the 1,000 sign-up bonus is enough for a domestic upgrade.
Hotel redemptions in Tanzania
Award flights are only half the story — Tanzania has several genuinely strong hotel point redemptions that pair well with safari operator bookings:
| Hotel | Award cost / night | Cash rate | Programme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Park Hyatt Zanzibar (Stone Town) | 15,000 points | $400–700 | World of Hyatt |
| Four Points by Sheraton Arusha (the Arusha) | 12,500 points | $130–200 | Marriott Bonvoy |
| JW Marriott Serengeti Lodge (opens 2026) | 70,000–100,000 points [unverified] | $1,500–2,500 | Marriott Bonvoy |
| Westin Dar es Salaam | 35,000 points | $200–280 | Marriott Bonvoy |
| Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The Kilimanjaro | 12,000 points | $230–320 | World of Hyatt |
| Hyatt Mr & Mrs Smith safari lodges (select properties in Tanzania) | varies — typically 30,000–65,000 points | $900–2,000 | World of Hyatt |
Sweet spots worth noting:
- Park Hyatt Zanzibar at 15,000 points/night is one of the best value-per-point Park Hyatt redemptions worldwide. Pair with a Hyatt Globalist suite-upgrade award if you have one.
- Hyatt + Mr & Mrs Smith partnership (launched 2024) opened safari lodges in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to World of Hyatt redemption. Inventory rotates — check the Hyatt Mr & Mrs Smith page directly. Eligible properties shift over time.
- Four Points Arusha at 12,500 Marriott points is a reasonable pre-safari night before a JRO transfer.
Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards both transfer 1:1 to Hyatt. Amex Membership Rewards does not transfer to Hyatt directly — for Hyatt redemptions, lean on Chase or Bilt points.
Booking strategy: order of operations
Tanzania award trips have more moving parts than a typical points trip. The order that actually works:
1. Find the award space first, then transfer. Use seats.aero, AwardFares, or Roame to verify Qsuite/Star Alliance/KLM space on your dates before transferring any points. Transfers are typically irreversible.
2. Book the international long-haul first. This determines whether you fly into JRO or DAR, which then determines your safari operator's pickup location and which destinations you can practically visit.
3. Book the connecting domestic separately. If you're flying Qatar to DAR in May–August (when JRO is closed), book the DAR → JRO connection on Air Tanzania or Precision Air as a separate paid ticket — typically $90–180 one way. Don't try to award-book domestic Tanzania flights; the value is too low.
4. Layer hotel awards last. Once flight dates are firm, search Park Hyatt Zanzibar and Four Points Arusha award nights. Both occasionally close out — Park Hyatt Zanzibar award space is tight in July, August, and Christmas/New Year.
5. Then contact safari operators. Send 2–3 TALA-verified operators your flight arrival and departure dates and let them quote the safari portion. Most operators include JRO transfers but charge separately for ZNZ or DAR pickups.
For budget travellers, miles can effectively halve the cost of a safari trip — the safari ground portion ($150–400/day per person depending on tier) is the same whether you arrive on miles or cash, so the percentage savings on the flight portion are amplified.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Transferring points before confirming award space. Once Amex or Chase points hit a partner programme, they cannot be reversed.
- Booking Qatar Doha–JRO in summer. The direct route is seasonal (Sep–Apr). If your dates are May–August and your itinerary shows Doha–JRO direct, double-check before paying — the schedule frequently changes and you may end up rerouted via DAR.
- Skipping the open-jaw. A multi-city award (into JRO, out of ZNZ, or vice versa) is usually the same mile cost as a round-trip into one airport — but saves a full internal travel day. Star Alliance and Qatar both permit open-jaws.
- Overpaying Flying Blue for KLM. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club consistently prices KLM JRO redemptions lower than Flying Blue. Transfer to Flying Club and phone-book.
- Counting Twiga Miles for the long-haul portion. Air Tanzania's loyalty program is useful for domestic flights only — not for getting you to Tanzania in the first place.
Browse TALA-verified safari operators for the ground portion once your flights are booked, or use the safari cost calculator to estimate the cash side.
