One of East Africa's oldest trading towns, Bagamoyo was the mainland terminus of Arab slave-trade caravans and the first capital of German East Africa. The Kaole Ruins (13th–16th century mosques and tombs) sit on a quiet beach, and the town is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.

What is Bagamoyo famous for?
Bagamoyo was East Africa's leading 19th-century port — the terminus of Arab slave caravans and the gateway used by explorers like Livingstone. Its name roughly translates as "lay down your heart", referring to the enslaved who passed through.
Is it different from Zanzibar Stone Town?
Yes — both are Swahili heritage sites but Bagamoyo is mainland, quieter, far less touristy, and focuses more on the darker history of the East African slave trade.
