Where is Mafia Island in Tanzania?
Mafia Island lies in the Indian Ocean about 160 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam and 20 kilometres off Tanzania's southeastern coast. It sits at the southern end of the Zanzibar Channel, between the Rufiji River delta and the open ocean. The island is part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, one of the most important marine conservation areas in East Africa.
Why is Mafia Island famous?
Mafia Island, Tanzania is best known for whale shark snorkelling — the waters around the island host one of the most accessible whale shark aggregations in the world, typically October to March. Beyond whale sharks, Mafia has pristine coral reefs with very few dive tourists, sea turtle nesting beaches, and a marine park protecting dolphins, dugongs, and hundreds of fish species.
Are whale shark encounters guaranteed?
No, but success rates are very high October–March. The marine park monitors sightings daily and operators check in the morning before heading out.
Is Mafia Island good for non-divers?
Yes — snorkelling with whale sharks and sea turtle encounters do not require dive certification. The island itself is beautiful and peaceful even without water activities.
