The Usambara range offers some of Tanzania's best village-to-village trekking, centred on the highland town of Lushoto. Giant endemic chameleons, the Irente Viewpoint, and centuries-old forest make it a compelling complement to Kilimanjaro.

June – September
The dry season is most comfortable for hiking. The Usambaras are relatively cool and green all year — even the "dry season" brings occasional mist. The landscape is pleasant in any month.

Guesthouse in Lushoto from $20–$50/day
Mid-range
Guided hiking package with accommodation $80–$150/day
Premium

Is Usambara good for non-hikers?
Yes — even without hikes, the scenic drives, village life, and cooler air are a refreshing contrast to the coast or northern safari circuit. Irente Viewpoint is accessible by vehicle.
Can I combine Usambara with a Kilimanjaro trek?
Absolutely — many travellers spend 2–3 days in Usambara to acclimatise and explore before starting their Kilimanjaro climb. Lushoto is 3 hours from Moshi.
