It is legally required to operate — and it's the single most defensible credential to check before you send a deposit. This ranking lists every operator in Safarani's directory whose TALA licence has been verified against a specific licence number or an on-site class declaration, sorted by our trust score. If the government has cleared an operator to run tours, they appear here; if not, they don't.

What is a TALA licence and why does it matter?

TALA (Tourism Agents Licensing Authority, under Tanzania's Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism) is the government body that licenses tour operators. Every legally operating tour company in Tanzania holds a TALA licence — Class A for full operations. It's the baseline "this operator is real and can be prosecuted if they defraud you" check. How does Safarani verify TALA licences?

Two paths. Either the operator provides a specific TALA licence number that we capture and cross-check, or their official website publicly declares their TALA class (e.g. "TALA Class A") on their About or Contact page. Both paths are documented on /verification-policy — we don't flip the flag on hearsay or on generic "we're licensed" language.

Why are there so few TALA-verified operators here?

TALA does not publish a real-time public register, so we can only verify operators whose licence we've seen documented. The list will grow as more operators submit their credentials to Safarani or publish them on their own sites. We're actively working through the directory to close the gap.

Are non-TALA-verified operators unsafe?

Not necessarily — but they are un-verified. Some operators hold valid TALA licences without publishing them prominently, and we simply haven't confirmed those yet. Others may not hold one at all. If TALA is important to your booking decision (and it should be), stick to this list until we've verified more.
