September picks up where August leaves off — the Mara River crossings continue, the dry season holds, and the weather is essentially perfect. The major difference is that crowds start to thin from mid-September, and by late September lodge prices begin to soften. For travellers who want August-quality wildlife with slightly more breathing room, September is often the better choice.

Weather in September

September is dry and stable. Daytime temperatures climb slightly from August — 23–27°C (73–81°F) — and mornings are still cold at altitude but slightly warmer than July–August. Skies are clear and bright.

The dry season is mature. Grass is low, water concentrated. Visibility for game-viewing is excellent.

Wildlife and the Mara crossings

The Great Migration crossings continue through September. The herds move back and forth between the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara depending on grass conditions, with crossings happening at multiple points along the Mara River.

Mid-September often sees the final major crossings. By late September the herds start moving south again toward the central Serengeti, ahead of the short rains that arrive in November.

Other parks: Tarangire elephant numbers approach their October peak. Ngorongoro Crater remains Big Five reliable. Ruaha and Nyerere are at peak dry-season game with almost no other tourists.

Best parks for September

  • Northern Serengeti / Mara region — crossings continue
  • Tarangire — building toward October peak
  • Ngorongoro Crater — reliable wildlife year-round
  • Ruaha and Nyerere — peak season, very few crowds
  • Lake Manyara — water levels good, dramatic scenery

Crowds and costs

September starts at near-August levels and tapers through the month. By late September, crowds noticeably thin and prices begin to soften.

The first two weeks of September run at August prices. From 15 September onwards, lodges typically drop 10–15% from peak. By 25 September, shoulder-season rates start appearing.

What to pack

Same as August — warm layers for cold mornings (fleece, beanie, gloves), lightweight neutral clothing for daytime, brimmed hat, sunscreen, binoculars, long camera lens. Closed walking shoes.

Why September often beats August

September delivers August-quality wildlife — including Mara crossings — with slightly lower crowds and slightly lower prices, especially from mid-month onwards. For travellers who can be flexible by 2–3 weeks, shifting an August safari into mid-September is one of the easiest ways to improve the experience and reduce cost.

Typical September safari costs

TierPer person per day5-day total
Budget$280–380$1,400–1,900
Mid-range$450–700$2,250–3,500
Premium Mara camps$900–1,600$4,500–8,000

September runs at peak rates through mid-month, then softens 10–20% in the last two weeks.

Park fees fixed: Serengeti $83, Ngorongoro $82 + $295 vehicle, Tarangire $53.

September-specific tips

Target mid-to-late September. From 15 September onwards, crowds thin and prices soften while wildlife stays excellent.

Allow 3+ nights in the Mara region. Crossings continue but timing becomes less predictable through the month. Three nights minimum.

Combine with Tarangire late month. September into October is Tarangire's peak. A 7-day itinerary ending in Tarangire late September is exceptional.

Book 3–5 months ahead. September is not as tight as July–August but still requires lead time for premium properties.
