If a first-timer asked one experienced safari guide which month to pick, the most common answer is October. The dry season holds, Tarangire reaches its elephant peak, the final Mara crossings happen, crowds drop, and prices fall to shoulder rates. October delivers August-quality wildlife with significantly less competition for camps and lodges.

Weather in October

October is warm and mostly dry. Daytime temperatures reach 26–30°C (79–86°F) — warmer than July–September. Early mornings are mild rather than cold (12–15°C at Ngorongoro). Brief afternoon thunderstorms become possible toward the end of the month as the short rains approach.

The dry season is mature but ageing. By late October, the first short rains may arrive — usually brief afternoon showers that don't disrupt game drives.

Wildlife in October

October is Tarangire's peak. Elephant numbers reach their annual maximum as the surrounding area dries out and herds converge on the Tarangire River. Herds of 200–300 elephants are common. This is the best month of the year specifically for Tarangire.

In the Serengeti, the final Mara River crossings often happen in early October. By mid-October the herds are moving south toward the central plains.

Ngorongoro Crater is consistent. Ruaha is at peak dry-season game. Nyerere is excellent.

Best parks for October

  • Tarangire — annual peak, elephant numbers maximum
  • Northern Serengeti — final Mara crossings, early month
  • Central Serengeti — herds returning south late month
  • Ngorongoro Crater — year-round consistent
  • Ruaha — peak game, no crowds

Crowds and costs

October crowds drop sharply from late September. Most camps run at 60–75% occupancy in October — comfortably full but no longer at the August squeeze.

Prices are shoulder-tier: typically 20–30% below August. Late October sees the deepest discounts before the short rains arrive in November.

For first-timers prioritising value and quality together, October is the standout month.

What to pack

Light layers, light fleece for cool mornings, brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars, closed shoes. A light rain jacket for the possible short rains late in the month.

Why October often beats August for first-timers

October delivers comparable wildlife — Tarangire is actually better than August — with 20–30% lower prices, significantly fewer crowds, and warmer mornings. The Mara crossings are the main thing you give up by choosing October over August. For anyone whose primary goal is not specifically the Mara crossings, October is the better choice.

Typical October safari costs

TierPer person per day5-day total
Budget$220–310$1,100–1,550
Mid-range$370–580$1,850–2,900
Luxury$700–1,200$3,500–6,000

October is shoulder-tier — 20–30% below August equivalents. Late October sees further softening as the short rains approach.

Park fees remain fixed at standard rates.

October-specific tips

Add an extra night in Tarangire. Standard itineraries give Tarangire half a day. October justifies a full day or two — the elephant action is genuinely exceptional.

Watch for the short rains late month. From around 25 October, brief afternoon showers may arrive. They rarely disrupt drives but pack a light rain jacket.

Book 2–3 months ahead. October is easier to book than July–September but still requires lead time for premium properties.

Combine with Zanzibar. Zanzibar's October weather is excellent — warm, dry, and the long-rains coast has fully recovered. An open-jaw safari + Zanzibar trip works very well in October.

Frequently asked

Is October the best month for a Tanzania safari?
For first-timers, often yes — October delivers dry-season wildlife with shoulder pricing, Tarangire at peak, and significantly fewer crowds than August. If the Mara River crossings are your top priority, July–September is better. For everything else, October is hard to beat.
Is Tarangire better in October than in August?
Yes — October is Tarangire's annual peak. Elephant herds reach their maximum size and the Tarangire River draws wildlife from a huge surrounding area. Tarangire is noticeably better in October than in August.
Does it rain in Tanzania in October?
Mostly dry. The short rains usually arrive in November, but late October can see brief afternoon showers, especially in the last week. These rarely disrupt game drives.
How crowded is the Serengeti in October?
Noticeably less crowded than July–September. Most camps run at 60–75% occupancy. The Mara region is still moderately busy for the last crossings; central Serengeti and Tarangire are much quieter.
