August is the most-requested month for a Tanzania safari — and for good reason. The Great Migration's Mara River crossings are at their peak, the dry season is at its driest, and wildlife is everywhere. The trade-off: it's also the most expensive and busiest month. If August dates are fixed, book by early June at the latest and read this guide for the practical details.

Weather in August

August is dry, mild, and bright. Daytime temperatures sit at 22–26°C (72–79°F) in the parks. Mornings are cold at altitude — Ngorongoro Crater drives can start at 5–9°C. The dry season is at its driest; grass is low, dust is high in heavily used areas, and visibility for both game-viewing and photography is excellent.

Afternoon thunderstorms are rare. Skies are clear most days.

Wildlife and the Mara crossings

August is the heart of the Mara River crossing season. The Great Migration's herds — over 1.5 million wildebeest, plus zebra and gazelle — are concentrated in the northern Serengeti and crossing the Mara River into the Masai Mara (Kenya) and back. Crocodiles wait in the water; lion prides patrol the banks.

Crossings are unpredictable. Herds can stand at the riverbank for hours or days before a single brave wildebeest jumps. When the pulse starts, thousands cross in minutes. To maximise your chance: 3–4 nights in the Mara region (Kogatende, Lamai, or Wogakuria area).

Other parks: Tarangire elephant numbers continue building toward October peak. Ngorongoro is Big Five reliable. Ruaha and Nyerere deliver peak dry-season game with a fraction of the Serengeti's crowds.

Best parks for August

  • Northern Serengeti / Mara region — non-negotiable for migration crossings
  • Central Serengeti (Seronera) — strong resident wildlife
  • Tarangire — elephant herds, far less crowded than Serengeti
  • Ngorongoro Crater — Big Five in one drive
  • Ruaha and Nyerere — peak game, near-empty

Crowds and costs

August is the busiest and most expensive month. At major crossing points you can share the moment with 30–80 other vehicles. Camp occupancy hits 95%+ from mid-July through end of August.

Prices reflect peak demand. Premium camps in the Mara region run $1,200–2,500 per person per night. Mid-range camps run $400–700 per person per night. Public campsites stay at $30–50 per person but availability is tight.

International flights to JRO also peak in August — see the flights to Tanzania guide for fare ranges by origin.

What to pack

Warm layers for cold mornings — fleece, beanie, gloves. Lightweight neutral-colour clothing for daytime. Brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars. A long camera lens (200–400mm minimum) for crossing photography — beanbag camera support is standard with most operators. Closed walking shoes.

Booking lead time

For August, book by early June at the absolute latest. Premium Mara region camps typically sell out 6–12 months ahead. The best mid-range camps are often gone 3–4 months out. Last-minute August bookings (under 8 weeks) have very limited options at premium prices.

For travellers booking August less than 4 months ahead and finding the Mara region full, consider the 4-day fly-in Serengeti itinerary — the flight to a Mara airstrip is sometimes easier to secure than equivalent driving access.

Is 4 days enough for an August safari?

Yes, with a fly-in. A 4-day itinerary with one flight (Tarangire airstrip to Serengeti) lets you spend 2 nights on the migration and a full day in Ngorongoro. Without the fly-in, 4 days is too tight — you'll spend Day 2 driving 8+ hours from Tarangire to the Serengeti. For full breakdown see the 4-day fly-in itinerary.

Typical August safari costs

TierPer person per day5-day total
Budget$300–400$1,500–2,000
Mid-range$500–800$2,500–4,000
Premium Mara camps$1,000–1,800$5,000–9,000
Ultra-luxury mobile camps$1,500–2,500+$7,500–12,500+

August is peak — 30–50% above green-season equivalents. International flights also peak in August.

Park fees stay fixed year-round: Serengeti $83, Ngorongoro $82 + $295 vehicle, Tarangire $53.

August-specific tips

Book by early June. Beyond that, you'll be choosing from leftovers at premium prices. Six months ahead is the standard for premium properties.

Stay 3+ nights in the Mara region. Crossings are unpredictable. One night gives you maybe a 25% chance of seeing one; three to four nights pushes it to 80%+.

Position with operators who fly. Driving Arusha to the Mara region is 10–12 hours each way. A fly-in via Kogatende or Lamai airstrip saves you 2 full days.

Bring proper warm kit for mornings. Most first-timers under-pack. Fleece, beanie, gloves, warm socks.

Accept the crowds at crossings. They are real and they are part of the August experience. The wildlife genuinely justifies it. If crowds matter more to you than the Mara crossings, choose June, September late-month, or October.

Verify Qatar Airways routing. Doha → JRO direct is seasonal and doesn't operate in August. If you've found a Qatar fare to JRO for August, double-check it's not actually routing via DAR with an internal connection.

Frequently asked

Is August the best month for a Tanzania safari?
August is the peak month for the Mara River crossings, which are the most dramatic wildlife spectacle in the northern circuit. It's also the busiest and most expensive month. For first-timers prioritising wildlife over crowds, August is excellent but October or September often deliver comparable quality at lower cost.
Are the Mara River crossings guaranteed in August?
No crossings are guaranteed — wildebeest cross when they choose. August has the highest probability: a well-positioned 3–4 night stay in the Mara region (Kogatende, Lamai, or Wogakuria) gives you 70–80% odds of seeing at least one major crossing.
How much does an August safari cost?
Budget shared group safaris start around $1,500 per person for 5 days including park fees. Mid-range private tented camps run $2,500–4,000. Premium Mara region camps push 5-day totals to $5,000–9,000. International flights are extra and peak alongside lodge prices.
How busy is the Serengeti in August?
Very busy in the Mara region — major crossing points can see 30–80 vehicles. Central Serengeti is moderately busy. The Western Corridor and southern Serengeti are much quieter. If avoiding crowds matters, brief your operator on this when booking.
Is 4 days enough for a Tanzania safari in August?
Yes if you fly into the Serengeti. A 4-day itinerary using one internal flight (Tarangire airstrip to Serengeti) gives you 2 nights on the migration and a full Ngorongoro day. Driving the full circuit in 4 days is too rushed. See the [4-day fly-in itinerary](/itineraries/northern-circuit-4-day) for the detailed breakdown.
How early should I book for an August safari?
Six months minimum for premium Mara region camps. Three to four months for mid-range tented camps. Booking under 8 weeks ahead in August is rarely cost-effective and limits camp choice significantly.
