Jutting into the crystal waters of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is home to over 1,000 habituated chimpanzees in one of Africa's most remote settings. Boat access only and strictly limited visitor numbers make this one of Tanzania's most exclusive wildlife experiences.

May – October
The dry season (May–Oct) offers the best trekking conditions. Chimps are tracked year-round, but June–October has firm trails and reliable sightings. The wet season (Nov–Apr) makes trails difficult and some camps close.
Budget
No budget option — minimum spend ~$600/person/night
Mid-range
Standard camp from $650–$900/person/day all-inclusive
Premium
Luxury lake camp from $1,200+/person/day
Is Mahale worth the long journey?
Those who have been consistently say yes. Sitting with habituated wild chimpanzees in a forest on the edge of Africa's deepest lake is a genuinely life-changing experience.
How close do you get to the chimps?
The habituated M-group allows humans to come within 8–10 metres. Time spent with them is limited to one hour to minimise disturbance.
